I am in El Paso, TX getting ready for another “Gender Culture and Communication” class for a State of Texas client.

My classes are emotionally safe venues, replete with social contracts that require dignity, respect, and trust. In my experience, these foundations contribute to honest conversations about the “herd of big elephants” in all of our rooms.

The events of the last few days, with the LA Clippers and the outrage that followed got me to thinking. Where have they all been?

For those of you old enough to remember the wonderful marketing tool from Johnson & Johnson in the 1960′s called “flesh colored” Band-Aids, did you ever think whose flesh they were colored like?

Hmmmm…never thought about it , huh? Band-Aids are marketed to everyone…right?

I’d like to share with you an article that exemplifies how another “colorblind policy” in fact has a racially disparate impact – another topic I’m sure we’ll be discussing tomorrow that is covered in the NY Times article below.

Just a little glimpse into why some feel it’s exhausting to be a person of color in the US. It’s the ” thousand small cuts” experienced in daily life that erodes the soul.

Remember …Empathy is an action. The path of least resistance is not.
